Computers/Data Entry  

Typing, Computer Work: Correspondence, mailings and data entry for a Human Rights group focused on Chiapas, Mexico. Spanish helpful. Training provided as needed. Eighteen and older. Si PAZ - International Service for Peace, P.O. Box 2415, Santa Cruz, CA 95061, (831) 425-1257.

Counseling  

Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy: Senior Network Services needs volunteers for the Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program(HICAP.) Volunteers, after training and becoming registered with the Department of Aging, offer information on an individual basis to people receiving Medicare.

There is an initial thirty hour trianing and subsequent internship. There is an on-going monthly inservice.

Occassional travel may be required to San Benito County.

Senior Outreach Peer Counselor: - The Family Service Association of Santa Cruz needs mature volunteers in Santa Cruz and Watsonville for its Peer Counseling Program. Volunteers provide in-home supportive counseling. Volunteers must be able to give 5 hours per week. Bilingual, bicultural volunteers are encouraged to apply.

Docents, Guides and Public Assistance:

Programming Hosts: Host barbecues, lead walking tours, and other programs at the hostel. Help us interpret the Santa Cruz community and its surroundings to the world. Volunteers need to be self motivated and have the ability to plan events around the hostel and hostellers. Guest Host: The Santa Cruz HI-Hostel hosts over 6,000 visitors from around the world each year. In this position you would be greeting guests, answering questions, and helping to make the Carmelita Cottages a traveler's home away from home. The shifts available are from 8-10 AM and 5-10 PM Monday through Sunday. No prior experience necessary. Drive farm workers and their families to medical appointments: Davenport Resource Service Center-

What we need: Volunteers with cars to drive families and farm workers from Davenport into Santa Cruz for medical appointments. Must have a California Drivers license. Weekdays. Must be at least 18.

What we do: Help youth, teens and families in the isolated North Coast and Davenport.

Drive Moms and young children to park - Escuelita Golden Torch

What we need: Volunteer drivers to transport Moms and young children under five on non-raining Friday mornings between 9:45 - 12:15 to "Together in the Park." Volunteers need a valid California Drivers' license, a reliable car, and insurance.

What we do: Together in the Park is a recreational program for moms and young children that takes place in a park in Corralitos from 10:00-12:00 on Fridays. This program provides the chance for Latino mothers who don't drive to take their children to a park for a chance to interact with other mothers and children.

Drive Seniors to medical apointments and banking - Volunteer Centers of Santa Cruz County -

What we need:Volunteer drivers use their own car to drive Seniors or disabled persons to medical appointment, banking and grocery shopping. Additional insurance and mileage is provided. Drivers set their own availability schedule, some drive once a month, some once a week, and some more often.

What we do: Provide rides to disabled person and seniors to medical appointments, banking and grocery shopping.

Meal Delivery: Deliver meals to shut-in Seniors. Meals are picked up mid morning (10:30 - 12:30) and delivered. Approximately 1 hour of time is needed. Contact Meals on Wheels, 464-3180 ext. 12.

Drive Seniors to a Meals on Wheels Dining Center:Pick up Seniors from their homes and drive to and from a Senior Dining Center. volunteer may eat a meal at the center during their volunteer time. Contact Meals on Wheels, 464-3180, ext. 12.

Drive Cancer Patients: The American Cancer Society needs volunteers to drive cancer patients to medical appointments.

Performs a wide variety of gardening tasks including: planting, weeding, harvesting, "double digging," watering, seeding. Organic method. works in the context of an organic garcen raising a wide variety of vegetables and flowers for a 55 member community supporter agriculture program. Retail:

Arboretum Gift Shop Staff : Volunteers who enjoy working in a garden atmosphere are encouraged to join the volunteer staff at Norrie's Gift Shop at the UCSC Artboretum. In addition to plants, the shop also sells books, fresh flowers and dried wreaths. Volunteers do the buying, inventory, display, publicity, etc. Volunteers are expected to provide 6 hours of work a month for which they receive a 10% discount on purchased merchandise. Teaching

Junior High Tutoring The Salvation Army needs tutors for their Learning Zone plus after school program. Volunteers provide tutoring to Junior High Strudents in vaious subjects. Volunteers supervise students during snack and recreation and act as a mentor to one or two students. The program opertes Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. Bilingual English/Spanish is a plus.

Volunteers must be at least 15 years old and be willing to donate two afternoons a week. Contact /Alissa Jones at (831)426-8385.

Teaching Computer Skills: Volunteers are neded to teach computer skills to adults with chronic mental illness. You will work one on one in a facility that provides a variety of opportunities including day treatment, job training, and recreational activities.

Elementary School Tutoring:Monarch School inSanta Cruz needs volunteers to tutor students one on one. Volunteers will assist students in grades 1-6 with individual studies, 2-3 PM Mon. Tues., Thurs, Fri. Includes 5-10 minutes of answering phones.

Adult Literacy Tutor: The Literacy Program of the Volunteer Centers of Santa Cruz County needs volunteers to be trained as tutors to work one on one and in small groups with adults teaching English Languge Literacy. Some students are also preparing for citizenship exams or job training.

After 15 hours of training, tutors are expected to commit four hours per week including preparation time. Tutors and students spend 2 hours per week working together.
